Changing Lives with the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP)

droppingoffforschoolWhen we drop our children off at school every morning or walk them to the bus stop, our greatest hope is that they might become smarter, more gracious, and more prepared for the future than we were at their age. Simply put, we just want them to be better than us.

The trouble is that many schools across the country are simply not measuring up to our expectations. The principal is nice and the teachers seem to care, but when it comes to helping our children understand their homework or think critically outside the box, the school leaves much to be desired.

This is what sparked the evolution of charter schools in 1988, a belief that parents must have options for their child’s education that stretch beyond the designated school that happens to match a random zip code. In 1994, soon after charter schools were introduced in the United States, Mike Feinberg and David Levin established the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP), a concept that quickly became the leading model for almost every charter school in the country.

kippFeinberg and Levin chose above all else to focus on the preparatory needs of low-income children who have just as many chances to succeed in college, given the right education and the right opportunities that others might take for granted. Here is how they describe it:

KIPP is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public charter schools with a track record of preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life. There are currently 125 KIPP schools in 20 states and the District of Columbia serving more than 41,000 students. KIPP builds a partnership among parents, students, and teachers that puts learning first. By providing outstanding educators, more time in school learning, and a strong culture of achievement, KIPP is helping all students climb the mountain to and through college.” is proud to endorse KIPP and all that they do for so many of our nation’s children.
